The scale of the catastrophic flooding along the Nepal-Tibet border continues to grow.
Nearly one week after a massive glacier and mountainside collapse sent a devastating torrent of water, mud, rocks and debris through Himalayan communities, authorities say more than 900 people have been confirmed dead and nearly 4,800 remain missing across Nepal and China's Tibet region.
As of Monday, August 31, Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported 903 confirmed deaths and 4,247 people missing.
Chinese authorities have reported another 16 deaths and 546 people missing in Tibet.
That brings the combined confirmed toll to at least:

4,793 missing
The numbers could continue changing as search crews reach previously inaccessible areas and authorities reconcile lists of missing residents, workers, tourists and pilgrims.
What Caused the Catastrophic Nepal Flood?
Scientists initially faced questions about whether an earthquake had triggered the disaster.
Evidence now points instead toward an enormous glacier and rock collapse.
The flooding began on Wednesday, August 26, when part of a glacier high in the Himalayas collapsed.
Reuters reviewed before-and-after satellite imagery showing that a substantial section of the glacier's lower portion broke away at approximately 5,200 meters above sea level, plunging roughly 1,200 meters to the valley floor.
The collapse generated an enormous ice-and-rock avalanche and debris flow.
That mass then moved through the mountainous river system below, carrying water, sediment, boulders, mud and other debris downstream.
Reuters subsequently reconstructed the disaster using satellite imagery, illustrating how the glacier collapse developed into a destructive debris flow and catastrophic flooding.
The River Rose Dramatically Within Minutes
The speed of the flooding made the disaster particularly devastating.
Experts with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development reported that water levels along the Trishuli River system rose by as much as approximately nine meters within just 30 minutes at one downstream location.
Communities had little time to react.
The torrent swept through settlements, roads, bridges, border infrastructure and hydropower facilities as it traveled downstream.
Video and photographs from the disaster zone show buildings buried in mud, roads destroyed and entire sections of communities overwhelmed by debris.
Where Did the Nepal Flood Happen?
The disaster occurred in the Himalayan border region between Nepal and China's Tibet Autonomous Region.
Some of the hardest-hit areas are in Nepal's Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, where communities and major infrastructure lie along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems.
On the Tibetan side, the Gyirong border crossing area suffered catastrophic destruction.
A Chinese rescue team that reached the devastated border-crossing complex described finding widespread ruins after floodwaters and debris swept through the area.
The disaster zone's mountainous terrain has made the emergency response significantly more difficult.
More Than 4,200 People Are Missing in Nepal Alone
Perhaps the most alarming development is the dramatic increase in the number of people officially listed as missing.
Nepalese authorities reported Monday that 4,247 people remain missing.
The figure represents a major increase from earlier estimates as authorities gathered additional reports from devastated communities and work sites.
Hundreds of foreign nationals are among those still unaccounted for.
The missing include residents, tourists, pilgrims, security personnel and workers at hydropower projects throughout the disaster zone.
Hundreds of Hydropower Workers May Be Trapped
One of the most urgent rescue operations is unfolding underground.
Hundreds of workers associated with hydropower projects in the flood zone remain unaccounted for.
Reuters reported Monday that rescue teams, assisted by Chinese and Indian experts, were intensifying efforts to reach people believed to be trapped inside hydropower tunnels blocked by flood debris.
More than 900 hydropower workers have been reported missing or unaccounted for at multiple project sites in Nepal's Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts.
Rescuers face the extremely difficult task of clearing water, mud, rock and debris from tunnel entrances while determining whether workers remain alive inside.
The effort has become one of the central focuses of the ongoing search operation.
A Child Was Found Alive Days After the Flood
Despite the enormous death toll, rescuers have continued finding reasons to hope.
CBS News reported that a 6-year-old girl was pulled alive from mud-covered rubble over the weekend, days after the disaster.
Survival stories like hers have encouraged rescue teams to continue searching areas where people may have been trapped in pockets beneath debris.
But with thousands still missing, the scale of the operation remains enormous.
Roads and Bridges Were Destroyed
Getting rescuers into the disaster zone has itself become a major challenge.
Early assessments documented extensive damage to roads and bridges throughout the Himalayan valleys.
AP reported that at least 35 bridges and approximately 40 kilometers of roadway had been destroyed or damaged during the initial stages of the disaster.
That has left helicopters as a critical part of the rescue operation.
Nepal's military has used helicopters to evacuate survivors, transport injured people and reach communities that cannot easily be accessed by road.
Hundreds of Foreign Nationals Are Missing
The disaster has become an international crisis because the Himalayan border region attracts tourists, workers and religious pilgrims from around the world.
Hundreds of foreigners remain among the missing.
Earlier reporting showed people from more than 30 countries among those unaccounted for.
ABC News reported Monday that dozens of Americans remain missing, while Nepalese authorities continue reconciling the identities and nationalities of those unaccounted for.
Many travelers were visiting the region as part of pilgrimages associated with Mount Kailash, a Himalayan peak in Tibet considered sacred in several religious traditions.
Mass Burials Have Begun in Nepal
The disaster has also created an enormous challenge identifying victims.
Bodies carried downstream by the flood have been recovered far from the communities where the disaster began.
Reuters reported Sunday that authorities had begun mass burials of unidentified victims in Nepal's Chitwan district.
Hundreds of graves were dug in the Devghat forest as authorities struggled with the number of unidentified bodies recovered from the floodwaters.
For thousands of families, that means the search is occurring not only at disaster sites but also at hospitals, morgues and relief centers.
Could Another Flood Occur?
The initial glacier collapse created another potentially dangerous problem.
Debris from the disaster blocked waterways and formed a barrier lake upstream.
Officials initially feared that the natural dam could fail, releasing another destructive surge of water downstream.
Those concerns temporarily interrupted some rescue operations.
By Friday, Chinese authorities determined that the immediate risk associated with the overflowing lake had become manageable enough for rescue work to resume.
Authorities have nevertheless continued monitoring the region because unstable slopes, changing water levels and additional landslides remain hazards for both survivors and rescuers.
Did Climate Change Cause the Nepal Glacier Collapse?
Scientists are being careful with that question.
There is strong evidence that the Himalayan region is experiencing substantial long-term changes as temperatures rise and glaciers retreat.
But scientists have not yet established that climate change directly caused this specific glacier collapse.
Earth scientist Dan Shugar told Reuters that satellite imagery appeared to show substantial snow loss shortly before the collapse and said researchers would investigate whether climate conditions contributed to the event.
Scientists also need to examine other potential factors, including the glacier's structure, geology, recent temperatures and surrounding terrain.
The broader trend, however, is concerning.
Reuters reported that the United Nations previously found Nepal's glaciers had been melting considerably faster during the previous decade than during the preceding period.
The Himalayan Region Faces Growing Glacier Risks
The disaster highlights a much larger problem across the Himalayas.
Communities throughout the mountain range live downstream from glaciers, steep valleys and glacial lakes.
When glaciers retreat or become unstable, several hazards can emerge, including:
Glacier collapses
Ice and rock avalanches
Glacial lake outburst floods
Landslides
Sudden debris flows
River flooding
These events can develop rapidly and send enormous quantities of water and debris into populated valleys.
The Nepal-Tibet disaster demonstrates how quickly a remote geological event high in the mountains can become a humanitarian catastrophe downstream.
Nepal Had Asked China About Better Early-Warning Cooperation
Another important issue has emerged since the disaster.
Reuters reported that Nepalese and Chinese officials had met roughly three months before the catastrophe to discuss disaster risks and the need for improved hydrological information and early warnings.
The disaster has renewed calls for greater cross-border sharing of satellite information, river data and early-warning systems.
That could become one of the most significant long-term policy questions to emerge from the tragedy.
Because rivers, glaciers and floods do not stop at international borders, effective warning systems require cooperation between countries throughout the Himalayan watershed.
Nepal Says Rebuilding Could Cost Billions
Even after the search-and-rescue operation ends, Nepal will face an enormous recovery effort.
Nepal's finance minister told Reuters that the country could require approximately $4 billion to $5 billion for reconstruction.
Destroyed roads, bridges, homes, hydropower facilities and other infrastructure will have to be rebuilt.
Communities will also face the longer-term challenge of determining whether rebuilding in the same vulnerable valleys is safe.
