Marvel’s VisionQuest Trailer Is Here: Ultron Returns, White Vision’s Story Continues & Everything We Know

Marvel fans finally have their first substantial look at what comes next for Vision.

Marvel Television unveiled the first official trailer for VisionQuest during D23 2026 in Anaheim, offering a much closer look at Paul Bettany's long-awaited return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

And Marvel isn't simply bringing Vision back.

Ultron is back, too.


James Spader returns as the artificial intelligence that nearly destroyed humanity in Avengers: Age of Ultron, while the series appears poised to finally answer one of the biggest questions left behind by WandaVision: What happened to White Vision?

Marvel has confirmed that VisionQuest will premiere October 14, 2026, exclusively on Disney+.

Here's everything the new VisionQuest trailer revealed, what Marvel has officially confirmed, and why this series could become one of the MCU's most important television projects.




What Is VisionQuest?

VisionQuest is a new Marvel Television series centered on Vision, with Paul Bettany once again playing the synthezoid he first portrayed in the MCU more than a decade ago.

But this isn't exactly the Vision audiences remember.

The series follows White Vision, the reconstructed version of the character introduced during WandaVision.


That distinction is going to be essential to understanding the new show.

Marvel is positioning VisionQuest as the concluding chapter of the television trilogy that began with WandaVision and continued through Agatha All Along. 

That immediately makes VisionQuest more than another standalone Marvel series.

It's the continuation of a story Marvel started more than five years ago.


Where Did White Vision Come From?

To understand VisionQuest, we have to go back to WandaVision.

The original Vision died during the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Wanda Maximoff later created another version of Vision inside the Hex surrounding Westview.

Meanwhile, S.W.O.R.D. reconstructed Vision's original physical body.

The result was White Vision.


S.W.O.R.D. initially deployed him as a weapon, but the confrontation between the two Visions eventually became something much more interesting than a traditional superhero fight.

The Vision created by Wanda helped White Vision access the memories stored within him.

White Vision then declared himself Vision and flew away.

And that was essentially the last audiences saw of him.

Until now.


The VisionQuest Trailer Finally Shows What Happened Next

The new trailer suggests that simply possessing Vision's memories hasn't made White Vision the same person.

That's where VisionQuest appears to be heading philosophically.

If you have someone's body and memories, are you actually that person?

White Vision possesses memories associated with the original Vision, but the trailer makes clear that he's struggling with what those memories actually mean for his identity.

That's a fascinating direction because identity has always been central to Vision.

He is artificial, yet deeply human.


He was created partly from technology associated with Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, powered through the Mind Stone, and brought to life as something far beyond the artificial intelligence that preceded him.

Now Marvel appears ready to turn that question inward.

Who is Vision when the pieces that once defined him are gone?


James Spader Is Back as Ultron

This may be the biggest headline coming out of the trailer.

James Spader has officially returned as Ultron.

Spader originally portrayed the villain in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, where Ultron attempted to bring about an extinction-level event before being defeated by the Avengers.

Ultron's connection to Vision runs particularly deep.

Vision's physical body was originally being created by Ultron before the Avengers seized it and ultimately brought Vision to life themselves.

More than a decade later, Marvel is bringing those two characters back together.

And there's an interesting twist.


Ultron Appears in Human Form

The trailer doesn't simply present the metallic Ultron audiences remember.

James Spader himself appears on screen.

According to Marvel's official information and reporting surrounding the trailer, VisionQuest explores an internal space representing Vision's mind. Within that environment, artificial intelligences can manifest in human-like forms.

That allows Spader to physically portray Ultron rather than solely providing the character's voice.


It could also provide Marvel with a way to explore Ultron very differently than it did in Age of Ultron.

Rather than simply being an external villain Vision must defeat, Ultron could represent something embedded within Vision's technological lineage and identity.


Vision's Mind Is Essentially Its Own World

One of the trailer's most intriguing concepts is the visualization of Vision's internal consciousness.

Marvel describes the series as exploring Vision's attempt to reconnect with his humanity and memories. The trailer depicts that internal world through a mansion-like environment populated by representations of artificial intelligence systems from throughout MCU history.

And Marvel fans will recognize several of them.


J.A.R.V.I.S. Returns

James D'Arcy returns as J.A.R.V.I.S.

That's particularly interesting because of Vision's complicated connection to J.A.R.V.I.S.

Before Vision existed, Tony Stark used J.A.R.V.I.S. as his artificial intelligence assistant.

Paul Bettany himself originally voiced J.A.R.V.I.S. before transitioning into the physical role of Vision.


James D'Arcy previously portrayed Edwin Jarvis, the human butler who helped inspire the AI's name, in Agent Carter and Avengers: Endgame.

Now the AI representation of J.A.R.V.I.S. inside Vision's mind is represented by D'Arcy.

For longtime MCU viewers, that's a pretty clever full-circle casting decision.


F.R.I.D.A.Y. Is Here Too

Tony Stark's later AI assistant F.R.I.D.A.Y. also appears.

Orla Brady portrays the character's human manifestation within Vision's internal world.

The inclusion of both J.A.R.V.I.S. and F.R.I.D.A.Y. suggests VisionQuest could explore much more of the MCU's technological history than initially expected.


E.D.I.T.H. and Other Marvel AIs Appear

The trailer goes even deeper into Marvel history.

Other artificial intelligence systems represented in the series include E.D.I.T.H., D.U.M-E and U.


That collection makes the premise particularly interesting.

VisionQuest isn't simply asking what happened to Vision.

It appears to be examining the larger technological lineage that eventually produced him.

Tony Stark's creations.

Ultron.

J.A.R.V.I.S.

Vision.

And the various AI systems surrounding them.

That could make VisionQuest one of Marvel's most technology-focused stories yet.


Tommy Maximoff Could Be Extremely Important

Then we get to another major piece of the WandaVision puzzle.

Ruaridh Mollica plays Thomas Shepherd. 

Marvel comic readers will immediately recognize the significance of that name.

Thomas "Tommy" Shepherd is associated with Speed, one of the Young Avengers, and is connected to Wanda Maximoff's son Tommy.


That becomes especially important after Agatha All Along.

That series substantially advanced the story of Wanda's other son, Billy.

Now VisionQuest appears positioned to do something similar with Tommy.


Exactly how Marvel will adapt that story remains to be seen, and it's important not to treat comic-book history as confirmation of what the MCU version will do.

But Thomas Shepherd's inclusion is confirmed.

And given the events of WandaVision and Agatha All Along, his presence is difficult to ignore.


Will Wiccan Appear in VisionQuest?

That's one of the big unanswered questions.

Joe Locke's Billy Maximoff/Billy Kaplan became a major part of the MCU through Agatha All Along.

That story also established Billy's desire to find Tommy.

But Marvel has not confirmed Joe Locke as part of the VisionQuest cast in its new trailer announcement.

Could he appear?

Absolutely.

Should fans assume he will?

No.

Until Marvel announces it or the series itself reveals him, Billy's potential appearance should remain firmly in the speculation category.


And What About Wanda Maximoff?

There's another obvious question.

Is Elizabeth Olsen returning as Wanda?

Again, Marvel has not confirmed her as part of the series in its current VisionQuest announcement.


Given the show's connections to Vision, Tommy, Billy and WandaVision, speculation surrounding Scarlet Witch is inevitable.

But speculation isn't confirmation.

For now, fans should treat any claim that Wanda definitely appears in VisionQuest cautiously unless Marvel officially announces it.


Terry Matalas Is Leading VisionQuest

The creative direction of the show is another reason VisionQuest has attracted attention.

Terry Matalas serves as showrunner.

Matalas is particularly well known for his work on Star Trek: Picard, including its acclaimed third season.

Marvel's decision to put him at the center of VisionQuest suggests the studio sees significant potential in the project.

The concept also seems well suited to his experience with science fiction stories centered around technology, identity, memory and humanity.


VisionQuest Completes the WandaVision Trilogy

This might be the most important piece of context for casual MCU viewers.

Marvel isn't treating VisionQuest as an unrelated Vision spinoff.

It is the third chapter of a story:

Chapter 1: WandaVisionWanda, Vision, Westview, Billy and Tommy.

Chapter 2: Agatha All AlongAgatha's story expands while Billy's identity becomes increasingly important.

Chapter 3: VisionQuestWhite Vision's identity takes center stage while Tommy's story enters the picture.

Marvel has explicitly described VisionQuest as the conclusion to this interconnected trilogy.

That makes watching WandaVision and Agatha All Along beforehand potentially much more valuable.


When Does VisionQuest Come Out?

Marvel has confirmed the answer.

VisionQuest premieres October 14, 2026, on Disney+. 

That means the wait isn't particularly long.

The D23 trailer arrived in August, giving Marvel roughly two months to continue building anticipation before the series debuts.


VisionQuest Cast: Who Is Confirmed?

The confirmed cast includes Paul Bettany as Vision and James Spader as Ultron, alongside Ruaridh Mollica as Thomas Shepherd. The series' expanded AI concept also brings characters such as J.A.R.V.I.S. and F.R.I.D.A.Y. into Vision's internal world.

The unusual structure could allow VisionQuest to revisit pieces of Marvel history without becoming a conventional nostalgia-driven MCU project.

Instead, those characters appear directly connected to Vision's attempt to understand himself.


Why Ultron's Return Matters So Much

Ultron hasn't been a major live-action MCU presence since 2015.

That's more than a decade.

And bringing him back specifically for a Vision story makes sense.

Vision and Ultron are essentially branches of the same technological family tree.

Ultron helped create the body that became Vision.

Vision ultimately helped destroy Ultron.

Now White Vision is trying to determine whether possessing another being's memories actually makes him that being.

Putting Ultron inside that story gives Marvel an opportunity to revisit one of the MCU's oldest questions:


What separates artificial intelligence from life?

That's also why VisionQuest could work even for viewers who have become overwhelmed by the sheer number of Marvel projects.

At its core, this appears to be a relatively focused science-fiction story about consciousness, memory and identity.


What the VisionQuest Trailer Does NOT Confirm

With a major Marvel trailer comes major speculation.

So here's where the line currently sits.

The trailer and Marvel's official announcements confirm White Vision, Ultron, Thomas Shepherd, the AI-focused elements, the connection to WandaVision and Agatha All Along, and the October 14 premiere. 

They do not currently confirm Elizabeth Olsen returning as Wanda Maximoff or Joe Locke appearing as Billy.

That could change.

But until it does, those possibilities belong in fan-theory territory rather than the confirmed-news column.


VisionQuest Could Finally Answer WandaVision's Biggest Unresolved Question

Five years after WandaVision, Marvel is finally returning directly to White Vision.

Where did he go?

What happened after his memories returned?

Does he consider himself Vision?

What does he remember about Wanda?

What does he feel toward Billy and Tommy?

And why is Ultron inside his mind?

Those are now some of the biggest questions heading into October.

The first trailer suggests Marvel isn't interested in simply restoring the old Vision and pretending nothing happened.

Instead, VisionQuest appears to be asking whether the old Vision can ever truly exist again.

That could make the series considerably more interesting than a straightforward superhero comeback.


VisionQuest Premieres October 14

For Marvel fans, October 14, 2026 is now the date to watch.

Paul Bettany is back.

White Vision's story is finally continuing.

Tommy Shepherd has entered the picture.

And more than a decade after Avengers: Age of Ultron, James Spader's Ultron is back in the MCU.

Whether VisionQuest ultimately reunites more members of the Maximoff family remains to be seen.

But after the first trailer, Marvel has made one thing clear:

The story that began with WandaVision isn't finished yet.
